Advertise your message in the sky with Skywriting
by Doctor Marshall
Skywriting.
Standing out from the competition is vital to beating the competition and winning customers. There are many ways to stand out, and in some Internet industries offline advertising alone will do the trick while other industries are already overwhelmed with companies who have advertised using every possible option. To really stand out you could consider skywriting, which involves burning special chemicals out of the back of an airplane. It really is a very effective form of advertising to a relatively localized area. The letters (up to 30 characters can be used, although the fewer the better) can be seen for up to 30 miles in any direction giving an area of more than 3,000 square miles.
Availability of skywriting.
Skywriting really is an art and takes a pilot of incredible skill to do it. One report suggests there are as few as six professional pilots with reasonable experience that can complete your skywriting task. Also, it needs to be completed on a day when there are clear, blue skies. If the wind rises above 3 knots it is unlikely that the skywriting will proceed. For this reason it is virtually impossible to schedule an exact time for skywriting. The best time of year for skywriting is usually September and October.
The cost of skywriting.
It is impossible to give exact costs but because of the few people who can competently carry out the job combined with the short space of time in which it can be completed costs are not cheap. It will be an expensive job but it is a serious introduction to the world that potential customers will find difficult to forget.
Is skywriting really a viable form of advertising?
It has to be said that skywriting is likely to be far too expensive for any business, never mind the new Internet business. As with all forms of advertising you should not put all your eggs in one basket. Use skywriting as a giant form of press release to introduce your company to the public near you and use longer lasting forms of advertising to keep people’s attention. You have to try to keep the number of characters as low as possible, but if you have a memorable company name or domain name you should be able to generate enough intrigue to at least get some attention.
Skywriting is more of an extravagant luxury than a viable form of advertising, but if it’s an option you want to investigate then you will need to find a company or individual with the willingness and resource to do it as well as the ability.
